James Turner is an ESRC Postgraduate Student in the department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton. His PhD project, which is funded by the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP), analyses the phonetics of native English learners of French.

After graduating from an Integrated Master’s of Languages (MLang) and subsequently completing a Master’s of Science (MSc), James began his PhD at the University of Southampton. His research objectives are twofold: to investigate the relationship between language learners’ online processing of foreign sounds and the acoustics of their productions of the same sounds, and secondly, to analyse the effect of acquiring and being exposed to a new sound system on productions of native phones.

James has also been a Research Technician for the sociophonetic research project funded by the British Academy, ‘Generation Why: teenagers as leaders of language change’ (PI Dr Sophie Holmes-Elliott). This is a real-time project which follows the acoustics of children’s productions as they mature into adolescents and become the innovators of sound change.

Finally, James also worked on the research project FLEUR (Foreign Language Education: Unlocking Reading) conducted by the University of Oxford, University of Reading and the University of Southampton (PI Robert Woore).

Research interests

My research interests include the perception-production relationship in foreign language learners; phonetic drift in learners’ native sounds due to hearing, using and acquiring a foreign sound system; and analysis of longitudinal data both from a sociophonetic perspective and in terms of second language acquisition.

Currently, I am analysing the perception and production of native English university students of French before and after a year abroad in a French-speaking country.
