Dr Trystan Sanders is Research Fellow in Marine Ecology within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton.

2020-2021: Project Consultant – Marine Science, SLR Consulting, New Zealand

2018: PhD (Marine Ecology), University of Kiel, Germany

2013: BSc. (Marine Biology), University of Plymouth, UK

Research interests

My primary interest is how animals and ecosystems function and how this dictates their sensitivity to environmental change. Key areas of research include:

  • Climate change in coastal zones
  • Carbonate chemistry
  • Functional diversity
  • Energetics
  • Biocalcification

I am currently researching variability in expression of individual and community traits in soft-sediment habitats and working to understand how this impacts ecosystem function under predicted climate change scenarios.

Previous projects I have worked on have studied environmental hypoxia, cephalopod breeding, osmoregulation, energetic modelling and sensitivity of bivalve larvae. I have also worked in the private sector as an environmental consultant and benthic taxonomist.
