Ben works with the Hidden REF, the Institute for Research Software, and UKRI-funded projects that support roles that are vital to research but are often not recognised in the academic system. With a background in qualitative social science investigating inequalities at work, Ben supports these 'hidden roles' by providing evidence for policy, as well as supporting interventions to improve recognition and careers.
Ben's PhD explored inequalities in the digital and creative industries over the life course. He studied how workers in Film and TV, Games and Websites renegotiated their creative careers as they navigated getting in and getting on while dealing with life course transitions such as childcare, mental and physical health challenges and aging, in the face of endemic structural challenges.
Ben also has a MSc in Social Research Methods and Sociology from the University of Southmapton, and a MSc in Global Development Management from the Open University.
Prior to his return to study, Ben was a music teacher for 10 years.
