About the Boundary layer wind tunnel

The Boundary layer wind tunnel is an extensively equipped low-speed wind tunnel which is regularly used by undergraduates and researchers across variety of industries. It is a long-fetch wind tunnel with interchangeable test sections to allow for flexible experimental setups.

The facility supports both fundamental studies of turbulent boundary layers and applied research relevant to aerospace, transport and renewable energy applications. The long-fetch configuration enables investigation of how turbulent boundary layers respond to fundamental parameters such as surface roughness and pressure gradients. The facility has also been used for scale-model investigations of buildings and urban environments, wind turbine arrays and individual wind turbines, as well as aerodynamic studies of wings and other systems.

The test section is 1.2 metres (m) wide by 1.0 m tall with adaptive walls, turbulence grid and various acquisition systems that can be deployed including particle image velocimetry, hot-wire anemometry, pressure measurements, force measurements, oil film interferometry, and background oriented Schlieren.

Technical specification

The wind tunnel can be configured in various ways depending on the specific requirements of the experiment. Maximum wind speed is 45 m/s and the tunnel incorporates a heat exchanger and chiller system to allow for continuous running.

Acquisition systems include 2D and 3D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), 3D Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and pressure scanning.
