We're helping to secure sustainable transport for the UK and the world. We are interested in how society shapes, and is shaped by, technological developments in transport.

About

Our research covers both passenger and freight transport whilst examining information technology's role in complementing or substituting transport.

We are particularly interested in how society shapes, and is shaped by, technological developments in transport, commonly termed 'intelligent transport systems' (ITS). This requires an inter-disciplinary approach involving engineering, economics and social sciences.

We have particular expertise in fundamental and applied research in:

  • traffic management and control
  • safety
  • the environment and sustainability
  • bus and rail operations
  • freight and logistics
  • walking and cycling

Facilities supporting our work include;

  • the Southampton University diving simulator (SUDS)
  • a fully instrumented vehicle for on-road measurements of vehicle kinematic characteristics
