The VibSim team brings together more than sixty years of vibration research at the University of Southampton, drawing on the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the Human Factors Research Unit and the Astronautics Research Group.
Between them, our staff cover human response to vibration, structural dynamics, active control, ultrasonics and experimental testing.
Core team

Dr Martin Toward
Martin looks after the laboratory’s commercial activities and development, with expertise in human responses to vibration, environmental simulation and railway applications.

Dr Ying Ye
Ying’s expertise is in human responses to vibration, including hand-arm and whole-body vibration, physiology and motion sickness. She also leads the Human Factors Research Unit.

Dr Cristiano Martinelli
Cristiano’s expertise is in vibration testing, modal analysis and experimental dynamics. He leads the laboratory’s modal testing and shaker facilities.

Prof. Jordan Cheer
Jordan’s expertise is in active noise and vibration control, smart structures and acoustic technologies. He leads the laboratory’s active control facilities.

Dr Michal Kalkowski
Michal’s expertise is in ultrasonic non-destructive testing, structural wave propagation, imaging and material characterisation. He leads the laboratory’s ultrasonic facilities.

Gary Parker
Gary looks after the day-to-day technical operation of the laboratory, including experimental equipment, facilities and practical testing.

Prof. David Thompson
David works across railway noise and vibration, with particular interests in ground-borne vibration, railway acoustics and vibration modelling and measurement.

Dr Evangelos Ntotsios
Evangelos works on railway and ground-borne vibration, including modelling, measurement and prediction of vibration generated by railways.

Zachary Francis-Cox
Zachary is a Consulting Engineer working on vibration and human response, with a particular focus on developing the laboratory’s simulation capabilities.

Dr Florence Mbithi
Florence’s expertise is in human responses to vibration, biomechanics and biodynamic modelling, with a focus on human movement and vibration exposure.

Phil Moxley
Phil’s work focuses on human responses to vibration, with particular expertise in whole-body vibration, injury and vibration exposure in military and extreme environments.
Wider support and strategic oversight

Professor Tim Waters
Tim supports the laboratory’s development within ISVR, linking its vibration and acoustics activities with the Institute’s wider research and commercial work.

Andrea links the laboratory with the Astronautics Research Group, supporting collaboration in aerospace, space and environmental simulation.
