Make Orbit Clean Again: understanding stakeholder perspectives on the challenges and solutions of space debris

Project overview

The project addresses the problem of contamination of Earth orbit with space debris, which are defunct man-made objects in space. If left untreated, the problem poses a critical threat to space infrastructure that supports modern digital life and monitors the Earth for changes that could help or harm the environment and society. Space debris poses risks to human wellbeing and economic activity on earth as it can disrupt global communication systems, satellite navigation, weather forecasting and other technologies society relies on. Many stakeholders are involved in addressing and managing the issue, yet we lack a clear understanding of how diverse areas of expertise intersect. This limits our ability to fully assess the impacts of space debris and to identify effective solutions.

The aim of the project is to map stakeholders and actors views on the problem of space debris to identify the key challenges, consider possible solutions and determine the actions required.
