About the project

This project aims to develop low-loss soft-glass microstructured optical fibres (MOFs) and explore their applications in advanced nonlinear optical devices, including wavelength converters, Raman lasers and amplifiers, Brillouin-based fibre sensors, and broadband light sources.

The research will begin with the investigation and optimisation of optical properties of soft-glass materials to establish low-loss glass compositions. The optimised materials will then be used to develop novel MOF designs through theoretical modelling and numerical optimisation, enabling precise control of modal confinement, dispersion and nonlinear optical properties.

Precision fibre drawing and advanced post-processing techniques will be implemented to fabricate low-loss, high-quality MOFs with robust mechanical and optical performance. Comprehensive characterisation of transmission loss, dispersion, nonlinear response and operational stability will be conducted to establish the relationships between material composition, fibre structure and optical performance. The experimental results will feed back into the material and fibre design, enabling iterative optimisation of the fabrication process.

Based on the nonlinear MOF platforms, the project will investigate a range of nonlinear optical devices and applications, including wavelength converters, Raman lasers and amplifiers, Brillouin-based fibre sensors, and broadband light sources. Particular emphasis will be placed on exploiting the unique nonlinear and dispersion-engineering capabilities of soft-glass MOFs to achieve efficient, broadband and tunable optical functionality.
