Mr Duncan Hornby is a Senior Research Fellow within Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton. Duncan joined the GeoData team in 2004 as a GIS desktop Developer/Analyst.

He is an advanced user of Desktop ArcGIS (analysis \ geo-processing) and a developer in ArcObjects, VB .Net and Python. In 2014 Duncan became an ESRI certified ArcGIS 10.2 Desktop Developer Associate.

Duncan works on a wide range of projects related to forestry, rivers, marine traffic, census, historic monument recording, mobile mapping, land classification and poverty mapping. Many of these projects have involved development of bespoke tools or automation of geo-processing and analyses. Please browse the GIS section of the GeoData website for examples of these projects. I provide technical support to staff and students across the University.

As an Accredited River Habitat Surveyor Duncan has participated in local and national river surveys.

Research interests

Whilst my application/development skills have been applied to a wide range of subjects, my personal research interests are in the development and mapping of river related data.

I am the developer behind the Barrier Assessment Tool, used in the USA, Brazil and UK.

My GIS knowledge in spatial data automation has allowed me to generate regional or national scale maps for river research.

I am in the working group for the Ordnance Survey Water Network Layer, the definitive UK river network.

I have maintained my field surveying skills and have been involved in:
• River Habitat Surveys (RHS)
• Fluvial Audits
• Geomorphic impact surveys
• Fine sediment surveys
