Research interests

Criminal law, criminal justice, penal policy and youth justice.

Broadly, Mark's areas of interest are in criminal law, criminal justice, penal policy and youth justice.

His interests include the empirical study of criminal law/criminal justice policy making processes (both historical and contemporary), and the critical analysis of contemporary criminal justice developments. Most recently I have been critically examining the current minimum age of criminal responsibility in England and Wales; exploring the practice dynamics of decriminalization and depenalization in 1980s English Youth Justice (with Dr Sotirios Santatzoglou); and examining questions of governance and decriminalization (also with Dr Sotirios Santatzoglou). His work has been widely cited, including, in argument, in the House of Lords and by the Court of Appeal in R v T [2008] EWCA Crim 815.
