About

We're a team of 30 academics and postgraduate students, and our global network includes groups in the UK, the EU, North America and East Asia.

We are internationally recognised as research leaders in several fields, including geometric group theory, non-commutative geometry and analysis, algebraic topology and applied topology.

The Centre for Geometry, Topology, and Applications has created a focal point for a large part of this activity.

Our research can be broadly divided into several categories:

  • geometric group theory
  • topology
  • non-commutative geometry
  • topological data analysis
  • semigroup theory
  • algebraic geometry

We welcome applications for PhD study in one of our areas of expertise. Please have a look at our research areas and projects, and do not hesitate to contact our staff for more information.

Disorder is Good – Taming disorder in self-assembled materials with topology

Instead of fighting disorder, we should identify structures that are ordered enough to perform the required function.
We have combined cutting edge experiments with breakthrough methods from topological data analysis to quantify emerging structure in apparently disordered nano-assemblies and classify their response to light. We aim to design a new generation of controllable nanosystems at a fraction of the cost of the current methods.

People, projects, publications and PhDs

Bernhard Koeck
Reader
My research interests are algebraic geometry, algebraic K-theory, algebraic number theory and homological algebra.
Stephen Theriault
Professor of Mathematics
My research is in homotopy theory, a branch of algebraic topology that studies continuous deformations. I am interested in problems fundamental to the area and applications of homotopy theory to other areas of mathematics such as Lie groups, gauge groups, manifolds and toric topology.
Ruben Sanchez-Garcia
Professor
I use pure mathematical tools from graph theory and topology in interdisciplinary research motivated by real-world applications.
