Research Collaboration in Risk and Benefit Perception Research

Dr Simone Dohle, University of Cologne
Dr Simone Dohle, University of Cologne

Dr Ian Dawson, the Centre for Risk Research Coordinator, is currently working on a research project with Dr Simone Dohle (Social Cognition Centre, University of Cologne) that explores the perception and communication of synergistic risks and synergistic benefits. They have recently been awarded 8,500 CHF (about £5,700) by the Biäsch Foundation, University of Zurich, to fund this research project.

Ian said "I am extremely pleased to be able to build on my research concerning perceptions of synergistic risks and to extend this work into the area of synergistic benefits. In particular, I am very fortunate to be able to collaborate on this project with Simone Dohle who has an exceptional track record in risk perception research. We hope that our research will provide important insights into the way that individuals judge risk and benefits, and that we can identify how to help individuals make better decisions in circumstances where different factors combine to create synergistic risks or synergistic benefits."

International Workshop on the Economics of Gambling

CEAR at Georgia State University
CEAR at Georgia State University

Two academics from the Centre for Risk Research, Professor Ming-Chien Sung and Professor Johnnie Johnson were invited to take part in an international workshop exploring the Economics of Gambling, hosted by the Centre for the Economic Analysis of Risk (CEAR), Georgia State University in 2013. The aim of the workshop was to bring together an internationally respected group of academics from a range of disciplines with interests in the topic of gambling to help develop an international, multi-institution, multi-year research agenda.

The workshop explored a range of gambling-related topics, and Ming-Chien Sung and Johnnie Johnson presented papers exploring aspects of risk-taking behaviour and the actions of  noise traders in betting markets. The workshop has led to the development of links between the Centre for Risk Research and the Centre for the Economic Analysis of Risk and to researchers in a number of countries. It also resulted in Professors Sung and Johnson being invited to  a further workshop which will take place in Cape Town in 2014.
