Aravinthan Varatharaj studied medicine at the University of Oxford, with further training in Liverpool and London. He moved to Southampton in 2014 as a Specialist Registrar in Neurology. After completing an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship, he now holds an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship.

He studies systemic infection and the brain. In particular, he is interested in the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and how it is involved in this interaction. In the SIBIMS project, he is studying how systemic infection affects people with multiple sclerosis.

He is also part of the CoroNerve Studies Group which is coordinating national surveillance for neurological complications of the COVID-19 pandemic.
