Our academics are involved in collaborations with many universities and research centres across the world, and we also offer student exchange programmes for our students.
Our academic collaborations across the globe include:
Our participation in student exchange programmes such as Erasmus helps to ensure that our students can operate effectively in an international arena. We have exchange programmes in place with a number of overseas universities, which enable you to gain credits towards your degree while studying abroad.
As part of these exchange schemes, we welcome overseas students to our campus each year. The presence of overseas students in our undergraduate programmes brings an international perspective to class discussions and helps to sustain our lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Through the Erasmus scheme you will be able to spend part of your third year at the following universities:
The University of Copenhagen is the leading university in Denmark and has a vibrant and highly regarded Sociology Department. It has expertise in a number of areas similar to those you will study at Southampton, including social policy. All lectures in Copenhagen are taught in English, which is widely spoken throughout Denmark. However, if you would like to gain knowledge of Danish, opportunities are available.
METU is a prestigious Turkish University which offers four-year undergraduate courses (modelled on the university system in the USA). The Sociology Department at METU offers a broad range of sociology, social policy and anthropology courses. The language of instruction is English.
Utrecht University is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. It offers over 200 courses in English that are open to exchange students. The Faculty of Social and Behavioural sciences offers courses in sociology, cultural anthropology, interdisciplinary social science, psychology and methods and statistics.
General information on the Erasmus scheme can also be found on the University's international pages.
We also have an exchange programme with the University of Wisconsin in Madison, USA. Wisconsin-Madison is one of the best universities in the USA and the Sociology Department is one of the highest ranking in the world. It offers a very wide and impressive choice of courses. In the past, students have benefited from studying modules centred on American culture, which have enhanced their understanding of the society in which they were living.
