Welcome to my staff page! I am the Founding Director of the Social Impact Lab and Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Southampton.

I lead the Social Impact Lab, the first centre in the UK dedicated to leadership for tomorrow's world

I’m a passionate advocate for higher education innovation and written over 60 articles for The Guardian, The Conversation, The Times of India and The Hindustan Times. My TED talk, Careers of Value, has been viewed more than 75k times. My forthcoming book is Equity, Diversity and Belonging: Reimagining Social Justice (2023). As recognition of my work in higher education, I have been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, as well as a World Economic Forum agenda shaper, and an UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab Expert.

I am the founding director of the award-winning University Social Impact Lab. SiL is the only co-curricular centre in the UK for social impact leadership. We have supported thousands of students on their leadership journeys since we started in 2016. 100% of our students would recommend SiL to others, with 95% stating it enhanced their sense of belonging to the university, and 87% said it increased their leadership skills. To learn more about our work, visit the SiL website.

If you’re a NGO, charity, or social enterprise and you’d like to work with us, or you’re a business that would like to fund our work, please email me.

My research and thought leadership focusses on three areas, all underpinned by action research methods, an interest in systems change, prefigurative practice and social justice.

I’d welcome PhD students interested in any of these research areas.

I’ve pioneered challenge-based education to improve graduate employability and connect universities to social and environmental challenges
