International reputation
The Economics Division at Southampton has an international reputation for research and teaching. All research assessment exercises (RAEs), since they began in 1992, have assessed our research to be internationally excellent.

High-quality teaching
In the last official teaching assessment, we received a maximum score for our teaching. In a recent survey of our postgraduate students, over three-quarters rated our teaching as good or very good and over 90 per cent said they would recommend Southampton to a friend or relative.

Rigorous training
Our programmes are designed to provide the highest quality learning experience. Our undergraduate programmes cater for students from a wide variety of backgrounds and provide a rigorous and comprehensive training in economics.

Our graduate programmes are structured to provide students with research and vocational training of the highest standard, with our research training programmes recognised by the ESRC.

International community
We have a thriving postgraduate community, attracting a wide range of students from very different backgrounds. Our staff are leading international researchers in their areas. They publish in the top academic journals and act in advisory roles to governments, international institutions and the private sector.

Extensive experience in key areas
We have one of the largest and most active macroeconomics groups in the UK, and a long-standing reputation in microeconomics and econometric theory. Our Labour and Development Group is at the forefront of empirical work in the area.

Challenging and supportive environment
We pride ourselves on our vibrant, international research and teaching environment. We aim to provide a place where all our staff and students can enjoy themselves while being challenged and stretched.

Signing off, I wish to stress that my Doctoral studies and achievements are an amalgam of inspiration, challenge, encouragement from fantastic academic staff and colleagues and a great working environment. For students thinking of undertaking postgraduate and/or Doctoral studies in Economics at the University of Southampton, I would simply say “go for it, you will love it!
