The award recognises undergraduates across the UK who have near-native language skills and a passion for finance. The prize was a 10-week summer internship at Bloomberg to gain experience and mentorship from finance professionals. Read about Aria's journey to her award.
Studying at Southampton
I enjoyed high-school economics and wanted to learn about the mathematical side to deepen my understanding. The BSc Economics econometrics pathway at Southampton was the perfect opportunity for me. The flexibility and breadth of module choice really caught my eye.
In my first year I started to code with RStudio in a quantitative modelling module. Now in my second year I’m learning about programming for statistics using Stata. The lecturers were always there for us and even organised drop-in sessions so we could ask questions.
I’ve also taken modules outside economics, such as Management Ethics in the Business School. It was interesting to see how what I’m learning in economics can be applied to management.
Learning through leadership
Beyond my studies, I’ve taken on leadership roles as Student President for Economics and treasurer of the Economics Society. Having to speak to groups of students and staff has helped my public speaking skills.
I’ve also learned about time management and task prioritisation, which I think are the most significant skills going into the workplace.
Support and belonging
I found juggling responsibilities alongside my coursework challenging, but I was well supported by the department.
My personal academic tutor played a key role in helping me settle in. As an international student, I didn’t really know anyone, but my tutor encouraged me to join clubs and societies and always connected me with people who could help.
Looking ahead
Professional skills are part of the modules and economics students can access the Financial Laboratory (FinLab) throughout our studies. I used the terminals during my first year and plan to take advantage of them for my dissertation.
I’m also using the University’s careers service and the Economics department’s industry connections to explore my next steps. The careers team brings in speakers to talk about different paths, and we get information about internships and job opportunities. Staff also share their insights into what companies are looking for.
The recognition from Bloomberg, combined with my internship and everything I’m learning at Southampton, is giving me the skills and confidence to prepare for my future in finance.
