See yourself in your future career

Published:

Three of our economics students gave their careers a trial run and developed sought-after skills thanks to our partnership with local company MOSL.

Vivian, Hermione and Sarita recently did a UoS Internship with MOSL. The firm operates the business water market in England, which enables more than 1.2 million businesses to choose their water retailer.

All three students had different motivations for applying for their internship.

Vivian’s main motivation for working in the water industry was to carry on a family tradition; Hermione wanted to learn about MOSL’s role as a company which manages large volumes of data; and Sarita was keen to experience working in the company’s Corporate Affairs team.

“Our interns’ project was to help us digest the water regulator Ofwat’s draft decisions for wholesalers' investment plans for 2025–30. All their work, analysing hundreds of pages of documents was included in a report shared with the senior leadership team (SLT) and company Board,” says HF Egan, MOSL Brand and Sustainability Lead.  “The students also took part in our Elevator Pitch workshops, so their input helped shape how we talk about MOSL going forward. Not bad for four week's work!”

What’s also satisfying is that we know Vivian, Hermione and Sarita have all gone on to secure other internships and work experience, and we love to see how their careers are progressing.

Feeling like they made a difference

Vivian, Hermione and Sarita all got a lot from the experience working at MOSL and found the whole experience valuable in their career journey.

Sarita gained a better understanding of the water industry, and she really valued working as part of a team, whereas Vivian has benefitted from improving her data analysis skills beyond her studies.

It was great to be able to take a large document, analyse the data, distil the key points into a report and present our findings in a logical and concise manner.

Leaving a legacy

From local startups and not-for-profit organisations to large graduate recruiters, our Careers and Employability Service provide a unique range of opportunities exclusively available for our students.

Internships don’t just improve the student experience, they also benefit the companies too, with the students leaving a legacy with each team, no matter how short their time with them was.

“Knowing that our analysis and recommendations will contribute to high-level discussions is incredibly fulfilling,” says Hermione.

The guide for your career journey

Internships can be a key step in navigating the path towards a graduate role. For Hermione, her experience has helped her to move forward with planning for the future.

“Throughout the internship, I significantly enhanced my communication skills, particularly in engaging with new people and diverse teams,” says Hermione.

The numerous meetings and interactions provided invaluable opportunities to practise conveying complex information effectively and fostering collaborative relationships. These communication skills are something I will carry forward into my future career.

"The discussions with colleagues about their careers and roles have been incredibly insightful and will undoubtedly guide me in my own career journey. These conversations have given me a clearer understanding of different career paths, and the various expertise required in the industry."
