Postdoctoral Research Fellow

My research is always revolved around the development of biomaterials and harnessing their potential for tissue regeneration.

Yanghee undertook her graduate studies at the Department of Polymer Chemistry (Lab of Biomaterials, Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences, Professor Yasuhiko Tabata) at Kyoto University (Japan). During her PhD in 2016. During her PhD (2012-2016), she was awarded a JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (2013) and developed a keen interest in enhancing macrophage recruitment to defects and modulating macrophage phenotype by drug delivery to accelerate tissue regeneration.

She joined Dr Jonathan Dawson’s research team (Nanoclay group) within Bone and Joint Research Group led by Prof Richard Oreffo at the University of Southampton in 2016. Yanghee has been focused on exploring clay nanoparticles' application for regenerative medicine and published in journals such as Nature Communications, Biofabrication, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Biomacromolecules. She also worked as a product/process development scientist for the regenerative medicine spin-out company Renovos.

She has been keen to investigate how immune cells respond to nanoclay, and whether nanoclay can modulate not only immune cells but also stem cells via a drug delivery system. Based on her research, in 2020, she was awarded MRC-AMED UK-Japan grant as a research co-investigator with her PIs (Dr Dawson and Prof Oreffo at the University of Southampton, and Prof Yasuhiko Tabata at Kyoto University). She is currently working on elucidating and modulating macrophage and stem cell responses to bioactive Nanoclay for bone regeneration.
