Dr Vivenne Orchard is a Lecturer in French in Modern Languages and Linuistics at the University of Southampton.

Vivienne Orchard studied French and Spanish at the University of Oxford, and has an MA in European Languages, Literature and Thought and a PhD in French from the University of London, both supported by British Academy studentship grants.

Before being appointed as a Lecturer in French at the University of Southampton, she worked as a lectrice at the University of Paris XIII and as a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.

Research interests

Current research interests are within the area of recent French thought and culture. Particular problematics and aspects focused on include: the history of the disciplines and the institutionalisation of knowledge; theories of national and cultural identity, cosmopolitanism and the post-national; travelling theories,  the transnationalisation of 'French theory', Derrida and America; cultural crossing, displacement and dislocation and the ‘location of culture’ in relation to theoretical, visual material, travel writing and academic memoirs. Vivienne is currently working on a book entitled Jacques Derrida and the institution of French philosophy to be published by Legenda, Oxford. She has had papers accepted by and presented work at international conferences in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland and Finland, supported by research grants from the British Academy and the University of Southampton. She is a member of: ACLA (American Comparative Literature Association); Forum for European Philosophy; Institute of Romance and Germanic Studies; Centre for Transnational Studies; the Raymond Williams Society; and is Reviews Editor for the journal Modern and Contemporary France.

Vivienne contributes to undergraduate teaching in a variety of areas within the fields of twentieth century French culture, thought and society and to the MA/PhD programme in Transnational Studies, with the unit Cultural Flows.
