I studied BA Music at the University of Southampton. I loved my time at Southampton and I think it prepared me really well for my current job. I’m a children’s book editor of non-fiction titles, specialising in music books.

I had brilliant lecturers who introduced me to other fields of thought in relation to music. Bringing in sociology, gender studies and anthropology to my arguments gave me the tools to work on a wide range of projects in my current job, or at least to research them and have a go.

I participated in Southampton University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO), Sinfonietta and numerous other music groups and societies whilst I was at university, all of which required me to be disciplined and sociable. I learned how to work in a team with my peers, manage my time, as well as understand how music worked. Although I was terrible at musical analysis, the principles taught in early lectures now help me to break down complex thoughts for young kids. I also set up an online magazine whilst at university, which helped me enormously with my current job. I learned to edit, write and commission interesting articles for students across the country.

But the main advantage of Southampton was being able to specialise in musicology in my last year. I only wrote essays in my third year, which helped me to think creatively and approach old subjects in a new way.
