About
Mr Bastian Hambach is the Stable Isotope Laboratory Manager within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.
He oversees and manages the day-to-day operations of the Stable Isotope Laboratory, an interdisciplinary laboratory service facility of the University of Southampton within Ocean and Earth Science (FELS) located at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.
The primary focus of the Stable Isotope Lab is the measurement of light stable isotope ratios in a range of organic and inorganic materials, such as δ2H, δ13C, δ15N, δ18O and δ34S with dedicated gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometers operated in dual inlet and continuous flow modes. The areas of research comprise geology, biology, chemistry, ecology, medicine and archaeology.
He is responsible for the training and supervision of a lab technician and lab assistants in stable isotope techniques, the proper use and maintenance of equipment and the relevant health & safety procedures. He furthermore provides laboratory supervision and training of postdocs as well as PhD, MSc, MRes and BSc project students.
In addition to method development, data analysis, maintenance and running of the instruments, he continuously working on expanding the lab’s analytical capabilities.

Research interests
- stable isotope geochemistry
- marine biogeochemistry
- marine and freshwater ecotoxicology
- paleoclimate reconstructions
- organic geochemistry
Current research
As a trained marine biologist he has a broad and interdisciplinary research interest ranging from marine biology, marine biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology and water chemistry to paleoclimate reconstructions, organic geochemistry and stable isotope geochemistry.
His scientific work during the last years focused primarily on isotope geochemistry and ecology with an extensive practical approach using isotope ratio mass spectrometers coupled to a range of sample preparation devices.
He has expert knowledge in the fields of mass spectrometry instrumentation, lab management and instrument maintenance as well as research and teaching, especially in the area of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and isotope ratio mass spectrometry together with the relevant sample and data processing procedures.
His work profile comprises tasks from independent field sampling on and offshore, sample analysis with complex instrumentation and data evaluation to the responsibility of the daily operation of a scientific laboratory with staff supervision.

Research groups
Any research groups you belong to will automatically appear on your profile. Speak to your line manager if these are incorrect. Please do not raise a ticket in Ask HR.
Research interests
Add up to 5 research interests. The first 3 will appear in your staff profile next to your name. The full list will appear on your research page. Keep these brief and focus on the keywords people may use when searching for your work. Use a different line for each one.
In Pure (opens in a new tab), select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading 'Curriculum and research description', select 'Add profile information'. In the dropdown menu, select 'Research interests: use separate lines'.
Current research
Update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’ and then ‘Curriculum and research description - Current research’.
Describe your current research in 100 to 200 words. Write in the third person. Include broad key terms to help people discover your work, for example, “sustainability” or “fashion textiles”.
Research projects
Research Council funded projects will automatically appear here. The active project name is taken from the finance system.
Publications
Public outputs that list you as an author will appear here, once they’re validated by the ePrints Team. If you’re missing any outputs that you’ve added to Pure, they may be waiting for validation.
