Callum is a Research Fellow for the National Biofilms Innovation Centre with a focus on emerging technologies for the detection of biofilm. His PhD examined the role of viable but nonculturable (VBNC) pathogens in ready to eat foods, which remains a major research interest.

Appointments

2018-present, Research Fellow in biofilm detection. University of Southampton, UK.

2017-2018, Postdoctoral Research Assistant in chronic wound decontamination. University of Southampton, UK.

Qualifications

2013-2018: PhD VBNC microbiology. University of Southampton, UK.

2012-2013: MSc The Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses. Imperial College London, UK.

2009-2012: BSc Biomedical Sciences. University of Southampton, UK.

Research interests

Callum is a microbiologist with several years experience in researching the detection of pathogens, specifically those in the VBNC state. Currently, he is exploring the potential for Raman spectroscopy to be applied as a clinical diagnostic tool. He is also examining its use in biofilm characterisation and the identification of bacteria in different phenotypic states, including VBNC.
