University life is about more than studying. It’s about the people you meet, the new experiences you have and the memories you make!

Here are some ways you can connect with others, make friends and get the most out of your time with us.

Complete your Welcome induction

We’ve put together an online induction to support all our students.

You need to complete your induction on Blackboard, our online learning environment, before your studies begin. You can access Blackboard once you’ve set up your University IT account.

Undergraduate induction introduces you to what study is like here and provides the tools and resources you’ll need to access teaching and learning.

Postgraduate induction shows you how to meet the higher expectations at this level, including developing your research and independent study skills further.

The Students’ Union: become part of the wider student body

The University of Southampton Students’ Union (also known as SUSU) is run by students, for students.

SUSU has a dedicated Freshers’ group on Facebook, where you can chat to other new students, and find out more about events and activities.

Connect with a mentor: 'Connect to US'

'Connect to US' is the University's mentoring programme for new students. It will support you as you transition to University life in your first few weeks.

Our mentors are current students who are at different levels of study in a variety of subjects.

Join the programme and answer a few questions to be recommended between three and five suitable mentors - or browse them all.

Once you've connected with a mentor, you can chat to them about any part of University life.

Join a group session

Mentors also host group sessions that anyone can join. Sessions coming up include:

  • First person in the family to go to university: my experience
  • Learn more about private housing
  • Top tips for independent living
  • Mature students

You can browse all the mentors' group sessions and join any of them.
