Dr Seth Giddings is Associate Professor Digital Culture and Design within Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton.

Seth is a media and cultural theorist, and occasional media artist. He teaches theory and practice of digital media, with particular interests in both popular and experimental playful media, from videogames and social media to activist and art projects. Originally from Yorkshire, Seth studied fine art at Bradford College and Goldsmiths College, University of London, has an MA in Visual Culture from Middlesex University, and completed a PhD on videogames and technocultural theory at the University of the West of England, Bristol, where he also worked before coming to WSA.

Seth has published widely on new media, videogames and play culture, and media theory. Recent research has centred on ethologies of the design of playful technologies, from mobile games to robots to playground swings. His publications include Gameworlds: virtual media and children’s everyday play (2014), Lister et al New Media: a critical introduction (2009), and he co-edited The New Media & Technocultures Reader (2011).

Research interests

Media, technology and culture with a particular interest in everyday, playful and experimental media; videogame studies; children’s play and media culture; philosophy of technology; ethnography and ethology of the design and testing of playful technologies and digital media.

PhD supervision

Seth is currently supervising PhD students working on pervasive games and co-creation in online game culture. He would be interested in supervising research students in these and any of the fields of research listed above.
