About this course

Study an Earth Science degree where you will learn how the planet works, how it has changed through time and how to solve current and future global challenges

This course is primarily taught at the Waterfront Campus (National Oceanography Centre Southampton), giving you access to a leading centre for ocean and Earth science research. You will explore the processes that shape the Earth, from deep within its core to the atmosphere, and how these systems connect.

You will study a range of subjects including geology, geophysics and environmental geoscience. By bringing these areas together, you will build a clear understanding of how physical, chemical and biological processes interact. You will also explore climate systems, natural hazards and the use of natural resources, and examine how human activity affects the planet.

The course gives you a strong foundation in your first year, with the flexibility to shape your learning as you progress. You can choose modules that match your interests, whether you want to focus on geology, environmental topics or geophysics.

This broad and flexible approach helps you develop knowledge that applies across different areas of Earth science and supports a wide range of career options.

You will learn through lectures, practical classes and fieldwork in the UK and abroad. Alongside this, you will build modern professional skills such as:

  • core field and laboratory techniques
  • data analysis
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • computer programming
  • an introduction to artificial intelligence

You will apply these skills to real-world problems throughout your Earth Sciences course.

By the end of your degree, you'll be able to analyse data, solve problems and communicate complex ideas clearly. You'll have the interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills needed to tackle global challenges with careers in areas such as environmental consultancy, green energy, engineering, further study and research careers.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.
