About
Zoé is a Research Fellow within the Health Workforce and Systems research group. She joined the University of Southampton in 2020.
She is leading and collaborating on a large research portfolio exploring the role of working conditions on the retention and performance of the health workforce, nurses in particular. As an economist by training, she uses a range of Applied Economics methods and theories to robustly quantify and provide empirical content to these relationships. Her expertise lies in independently analysing large cross-sectional and longitudinal workforce datasets. She has also designed and conducted discrete choice experiments (DCE) to elicit the job preferences of the health workforce and estimate potential trade-offs.
Prior to joining the University of Southampton, Zoé was a Research Fellow at the Health Economics Research Unit (HERU) at the University of Aberdeen. She applied a range of micro-econometric methods to investigate the behaviour and well-being of the healthcare workforce (nurses, medical doctors) in areas of mental health, work absence, and retirement. She also investigated public sector resource allocation to inform NHS funding in England.

Current research
Zoé has played a key role in an NIHR-funded project exploring the impact of nursing shift patterns on patient outcomes. She is currently the main Research fellow and work-package lead on an NIHR-PRP grant. The project aims to evaluate how well initiatives in the three N50K programme (i.e. Tory’s commitment to increase NHS nurses in England by 50,000 by 2024) are working, and how they could be improved to expand the NHS nursing workforce. As part of this project, she is designing and conducting DCEs to estimate the job and retirement preferences of early- and late-career nurses, respectively.
