Other entry requirements

UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT)

The UCAT focuses on exploring your cognitive powers, as well as other attributes considered valuable for healthcare professionals. All applicants to the BMBS programmes are required to take the UCAT in the summer prior to making an application. The UCAT results are only valid for applications to universities in the year in which the test is taken. If your application to medical school is not successful and you reapply the following year, you will be required to re-sit the UCAT.

How is the UCAT score used in the selection process?

All applicants will need to take the UCAT test.

Applicants for BM4 and BM5 will be ranked by UCAT score to determine who should be invited to a Selection Day.

The UCAT score is reviewed again alongside performance at Selection Days to determine who will receive an offer.

Please note that the UCAT score of those applicants attending a Selection Day varies year on year and as such it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend a Selection Day.

For further information on the UCAT please visit the UCAT website.

Other criteria

Applicants who are retaking their A Levels/GCSES/or equivalent qualifications will be considered for our programmes However, if applicants have retaken the same subjects more than once, these applications will be considered on a case by case basis. If a subject is not retaken the following year but at a later date, these applications will be considered on a case by case basis.

If accepted, the offer would be the same as the standard offer for the appropriate programme.

We are unable to consider applications from applicants who fail to meet the requirements of their offer then shortly afterwards undertake a different, equivalent qualification. For example, we will not consider an application from an A Level student who undertakes an Access course shortly after completing their A Level.

A Levels taken early

We will consider A Levels that have been taken early and outside of the standard Years 12 and 13.

Transfer applications

We are unable to consider transfer applications for any of the BMBS programmes.

EU and international applicants

EU and international applicants are expected to fulfil the same academic and non-academic criteria as home applicants, and you can do so through a wide range of qualifications.

If you are an international or EU applicant and English is not your first language, you should offer one of the University of Southampton's recognised tests in English language. Test scores are only valid for two years from the date of issue.

Please note that EU and International students are not eligible to apply for the BM6 or BM4 programmes.

International qualifications

Please also refer to UK Naric for further information regarding international qualifications. This is the UK's National Agency responsible for providing information on academic, vocational and professional qualifications from across the world.
