Other entry requirements

UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT)

The UKCAT focuses on exploring your cognitive powers, as well as other attributes considered valuable for healthcare professionals. All applicants to the BMBS programmes are required to take the UKCAT in the summer prior to making an application. The UKCAT results are only valid for applications to universities in the year in which the test is taken. If your application to medical school is not successful and you reapply the following year, you will be required to re-sit the UKCAT.

How is the UKCAT score used in the selection process?

All applicants will need to take the UKCAT test.

Applicants for BM4 and BM5 will be ranked by UKCAT score to determine who should be invited to a Selection Day.

The UKCAT score is reviewed again alongside performance at Selection Days to determine who will receive an offer.

Please note that the UKCAT score of those applicants attending a Selection Day varies year on year and as such it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend a Selection Day.

For further information on the UKCAT please visit the UKCAT website.

Other criteria

Retakes

The Selection Policy for 2018 entry has been amended under 3.13 to show the below information

Applicants who are retaking their A Levels (A2)/GCSES/or equivalent qualifications are not normally eligible for consideration for BM5 or BM6.

In exceptional circumstances retakes may be considered on a case-by-case basis for applicants to the BM6 programme and mature non graduate applicants over the age of 21 to the BM5 programme.  In addition retakes for BM5 school leaver applicants may be considered if the applicant was previously made an offer for BM5 Medicine at Southampton

If accepted, the offer would be the same as the standard offer for the appropriate programme. Cases will only be reviewed after an application has been submitted; the Faculty of Medicine will not review any information before submission of an application.

We are unable to consider applications from applicants who do not meet our criteria and then directly, or almost directly, undertake a different equivalent qualification. For example, an A Level student who undertakes an Access course directly after completing their A Levels.

A Levels taken early

A Levels should be taken at one sitting for all programmes and within the standard 2 years, Years 12 and 13. We may consider A Levels which have been taken/started prior to Years 12 and 13, for example in the case of Maths A Level.  All applications will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Transfer applications

We are unable to consider transfer applications for any of the BMBS programmes.

EU and international applicants

EU and international applicants are expected to fulfil the same academic and non-academic criteria as home applicants, and you can do so through a wide range of qualifications.

If you are an international or EU applicant and English is not your first language, you should offer one of the University of Southampton's recognised tests in English language. Test scores are only valid for two years from the date of issue.

Offers to EU students are made from the UK quota.

Please note that International students are not eligible to apply for the BM6 or BM4 programmes.

International qualifications

Please also refer to UK Naric for further information regarding international qualifications. This is the UK's National Agency responsible for providing information on academic, vocational and professional qualifications from across the world.
