World leading research

There are many opportunities for you to engage with Southampton’s world leading research in, for example, cancer, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disease and immunology, via the student-run INSPIRE programme.

Whether you aim to become a general practitioner, a surgeon, or to follow any other field, Medicine at Southampton will provide the best possible foundation for your future career. We select our students on the basis of the qualities we feel are essential in a doctor, and we place as much emphasis on non-academic skills and interests as we do on academic achievement.

We are looking for applicants who embrace the NHS values outlined in the NHS Constitution. We expect our graduates to work together for patients; to treat patients, carers, and colleagues with respect and dignity; to be compassionate; to be committed to high quality care and to work to improve the health and wellbeing of peoples experience in the health service.

Choice of programmes

Through our Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programmes, we provide a comprehensive and balanced study programme which enables you to develop the skills and professional behaviour you will need as a newly qualified doctor.

Career opportunities

As part of Medicine you will be able to take advantage of exciting opportunities for inter-professional learning, which will be invaluable as you prepare to join the healthcare teams of the future. Our programmes are the first choice for anyone serious about pursuing a career in medicine.
