You may be looking for relevant paid employment straight away, or planning to undertake further study – in which case you could become part of Southampton's 5,000-strong postgraduate student community and have access to state-of-the-art learning resources.

You might be considering a switch into a completely different field, or you may be unsure of where to go next. Whatever your situation, the Careers and Employability Service offers a wide range of services and support to students at all stages of their University life. 

Resources for leavers

Psychology graduates from Southampton go into a wide range of careers and postgraduate courses. This site has been designed specifically to assist you along whatever career path you choose, whether this involves work within or outside the field of psychology. The site provides comprehensive information on the career routes available in psychology, including the required postgraduate qualifications and advice on obtaining relevant work experience.  It also provides useful hints and tips on successfully negotiating the application process from writing a CV to attending an interview.  Let us know how you get on. It is really important to us to hear how you get on now you have finished your course. Prospective students are keen to know what students go on to do once they have left, so you would be helping them too. 

Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Survey

This is a national survey of all university graduates to find out what you are doing six months after you graduate.  It is this data that is used by the league tables that get published each year, so we do encourage you to complete this. You will be sent this survey link via email.

Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education' (DLHE) is an annual survey, conducted by UK institutions every year in order to find out what their graduates have gone on to do after completing their course. Find out more about the DLHE and how the data is used.


Psychology is diverse; explore the disciplines thoroughly before you decide what to study as a postgraduate student or apply to jobs. Talk to each other, and as many postgrads, post docs, lecturers, professors as possible as you study the field.
