About this course

Learn the skills to work as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) and help assess and treat adults with anxiety and depression on this PGCert in Low Intensity Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Our expert academics will train you to deliver CBT informed psychological interventions within a stepped care model. You’ll complement your learning with clinical work in approved NHS Talking Therapies (NHSTT) service, allowing you to apply theory in a real-life setting working with patients.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of psychological treatment that focuses on helping people recognise and change unhelpful patterns in their thoughts and behaviours. CBT is an evidence-based treatment option recommended by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for many mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression.

This part time programme is for individuals aiming to work within step 2 of NHS Talking Therapies services. You can only enrol once they have secured a trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) role working in one of the NHSTT services in Hampshire.

During the course you will develop the skills to assess common mental health problems and deliver low intensity CBT interventions. These interventions support adults experiencing conditions such as depression and anxiety, helping them build coping strategies and manage their symptoms more effectively.

The course follows a National Curriculum for PWP training and the course is accredited by British Psychological Society (BPS).

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • assess patients to support them in identifying their main difficulties or things they would like to change
  • deliver Low Intensity CBT interventions by providing information and support for treatment to patients suffering from common mental health problems
  • operate from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and respects diversity
  • manage clinical caseloads effectively within the Low Intensity CBT setting
  • work safely and to high standards respecting professional standards and adopting an ethical standpoint
  • use supervision to aid clinical decision-making and clinical skills development

Successful graduates will be able to work as a qualified PWP in an NHSTT or Low Intensity CBT service.
