The University of Southampton

Staying safe and well

Your safety is our top priority and we’ve put a number of safety measures in place to help you to stay safe and well during your studies. As a new student, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with our safety guidance, as well as signing up for the COVID-19 Testing Programme, and registering with a doctor when you arrive. We’ve included some helpful information on all of those things and more, below.

Campus life

We've created a campus environment where students can take advantage of our research-led education, have fun, relax and enjoy a safe environment to learn and study in.

Our safety measures and expectations

Stay safe with regular COVID-19 testing

To help keep our University community safe, all students and staff are expected to take part in regular COVID-19 testing while living in halls or accessing any of our campuses and facilities. Despite the easing of restrictions in the UK, testing will continue to be a part of life at the University this next academic year.

Please continue to test even if you have been fully-vaccinated and even if you don’t have symptoms at the time. Regular, asymptomatic testing is vital to help us prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Please be reassured there is a lot of support is available from the University for anyone who tests positive or who needs to isolate.

COVID-19 Vaccinations

The evidence suggests that the COVID-19 vaccination is highly effective at preventing serious illness and we actively encourage and support our community to receive their vaccinations as soon as they are eligible.

There is no law that says people must have the vaccine and we understand that there may be some people who are advised not to have the vaccine, for example for health reasons.

Register for a doctor

We encourage all our students, UK and international, to register with a local doctor. Your health and wellbeing is very important and you never know when you may need a doctor so make sure you sign up to a local practice.
