About this course

Become fluent in 2 languages that play a vital role on the world stage. You'll explore the cultures, histories and linguistics of French and German-speaking nations. Your language expertise will present many travel and work opportunities across the world.

Following our unique system of language development, you’ll start at a level that matches your ability on this French and German linguistics degree. This means we can personalise your learning so you make the best progress.

By studying linguistics alongside French and German, you'll explore topics like the principles underlying the structure of sentences and the articulations of the mouth involved in speech.

A special module in year 2 will make sure you’re ready for working and studying abroad in year 3.

You'll spend year 3 abroad in either a work placement, a British Council placement or at one of Southampton’s partner universities.

You’ll also have the opportunity to prepare a final year dissertation with guidance from a supervisor.

You’ll have a range of resources to support you, including the Centre for Language Study which offers  language and academic advising.
