A group of primary school age children are sitting on bean bags on the floor. They are engaged watching a speech therapist talking to them and showing them a large letter ‘S’. They are all touching their chin with an index finger.

Studying languages and linguistics led to my career as a Speech and Language therapist

Bryony graduated in 2016 with a Modern language and Linguistics degree. The linguistics aspect of her degree provided a good foundation for her Speech and Language Therapy training master’s course.

Memories of Avenue Campus

Avenue campus was a really nice atmosphere to study and just spend time in. I remember the lovely lecturers who were always so friendly and kind. I enjoyed being a part of the language societies such as Fren Soc, and the language cafes.

The language cafes were a great opportunity to practise speaking other languages and to meet people.

I joined quite a lot of the performing arts societies such as ballroom and Latin dancing, tap dancing, and yoga society. I also did some volunteering outside of university with The Art House, Headway and The Stroke Association.

After graduating I worked as a support worker for Rose Road in Southampton. This is a respite centre for children and young people with complex needs.

What I’m doing now

I am now a Speech and Language Therapist, working in Bristol. I work with children and young people in mainstream schools, colleges and in clinic settings. The youngest I work with is 2 years old and the oldest is 19 years old.

I support a broad variety of needs that includes work with young people with Developmental Language Disorders or Language Disorders associated with another condition, and children with speech sound disorders. I also work with autistic children and young people, and those with situational mutism.

I provide support on a 1:1 level with children and young people with assessment and intervention and sometimes I also run group sessions.

I help school staff develop targeted interventions that support speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). I work with schools to improve their universal support including whole-school vocabulary curriculums, developing the environment to make it more communication friendly. I also work with parents and caregivers where my knowledge of French and Spanish can come in handy.

In my spare time, I still dance and do yoga, I love being outdoors and active and have recently started learning how to beatbox.
