About this course

Our BSc Mathematics with Data Science degree combines mathematical theory with practical skills in data analysis and computation. You'll gain an understanding of core mathematical concepts such as calculus, linear algebra, and statistics.

As you'll be learning maths for data science, you'll also look at programming languages like Python and R. Through your studies you'll apply your expertise to a range of technical issues in industry, environmental science and medical research.  This course focuses on data collection, processing, and analysis techniques to emphasise the real-world application of mathematics for data science. With the technical skills you develop, you'll have the ability to address important problems from the modern world. You'll explore topics like:

machine learning
data visualisation
advanced mathematical concepts and techniques
statistical modelling
optimisation

With your knowledge of mathematics, you'll be able to understand complex algorithms and statistical models, which will be essential when interpreting datasets. Combined with your data science analytical capabilities, you'll be able to confidently produce data-driven insights.

Data is a critical asset for businesses, research, and policy making. As a BSc Maths with Data Science graduate, you'll have the experience to tackle complex data-focused challenges. With your skills in maths and data analysis, you'll be prepared for careers in data science, analytics, and research.

AAA or AABB including Mathematics (grade A)

A-levels additional information

If a STEP paper is taken alongside three A-levels then the offer will be AAB including Mathematics (grade A). We accept either of the two STEP papers and grade 2 needs to be achieved. For more details about STEP see the OCR website.

A-levels with Extended Project Qualification

If you are taking an EPQ in addition to 3 A levels, you will receive the following offer in addition to the standard A level offer: AAB including Mathematics (grade A) and grade A in the EPQ

Course structure

This BSc Maths with Data Science course runs for 3 years, each with 2 semesters.

Year 1 overview

In your first year you'll study fundamental areas of mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra and statistics. You'll also be introduced to computational methods and programming.

Year 2 overview

In your second year you'll start to focus on areas within data science including the fundamental building blocks of computing and visualisation, statistical modelling and inference. You can also still pursue your interests in other areas of mathematics through the choice of optional modules.

Year 3 overview

In your third year you'll study machine learning and complete your Final Year Project. Through your choice of optional modules, you'll be able to tailor your degree in areas including statistical modelling and computation, advanced data analysis, mathematical modelling and optimisation.
