Hi, I'm Ryan Wilson and I studied BSc Geography within Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

I thought the quality of the halls accommodation was fantastic and I could easily see myself settling in. I liked the fact that the Students' Union seemed very active, and the facilities were brilliant.

Q: Why did chose to undertake your studies / research with the University of Southampton?

On the open days, the University conveyed a warm, friendly and lively atmosphere, where students enjoy studying and have access to many fantastic facilities. The University has a good reputation, illustrated by its standing in the league tables, especially within Geography. The amount of green space on campus was another bonus. The course in Geography sounded very interesting and much of the research within Geography had been recognised as “world-leading”. Furthermore, I thought the quality of the halls accommodation was fantastic and I could easily see myself settling in. I liked the fact that the Students' Union seemed very active, and the facilities were brilliant.

Q: Rate the support offered by your lecturers, academic supervisors and/or research assistants, and why.

I’ve received a fantastic range of support from supervisors, especially feedback on essays as well as support in fieldwork, applying new geographical techniques. Lecturers have emphasised the need to develop geographical skills, which has helped to improve report and essay writing. Also, help sessions were useful for coursework-related components of modules.

Q: What are your future aspirations and ambitions after you graduate?

I would like to work in the field of environmental management, whether it be developing our energy resources, or looking at the problem of global warming and how to go about mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change. I would also be interested in working for the Environment Agency or in local government, working to develop sustainable human practices and to enhance the technology available in the management of environmental systems.

Your University experience:

Q: How did you find out about the course/University?

I looked through several university prospectuses in my school library, as well as researching online for institutions that were strong in the field of Physical Geography. This included looking at league tables, as well as independent websites, where students outlined the positives and negatives of many aspects of life at different universities.

Q: What have you enjoyed most about studying at Southampton?

I’ve enjoyed meeting new people both on my course and in halls. Furthermore, I’ve enjoyed taking on new roles and responsibilities such as becoming Vice-President of the Geography Society, as well as being a course rep for BSc first year Geography students.

Q: Would you recommend the course/University to future students, and why?

I would strongly recommend the course and the University for the following reasons:
