Dr Johanna Hjalmarsson is Informa Associate Professor in Maritime and Commercial Law within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I am lucky to be able to explore many aspects of maritime, commercial and insurance law in my research.

Johanna is the Informa Associate Professor in Maritime and Commercial Law.

After completing service as a tingsnotarie (Junior Judge) in her native Sweden, Johanna specialised in the support of law reform by international organisations, spending several years as a legal advisor with the UN and with the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She has been with the University of Southampton since 2004, initially as a researcher with the Institute of Maritime Law and since 2006 on a research position funded by Informa, the maritime and commercial law publisher. Johanna’s research covers maritime and commercial law, insurance law and dispute resolution. She is the editor of Lloyd’s Law Reporter and Shipping and Trade Law as well as The Ratification of Maritime Conventions. She takes a particular interest in jurisdictions undergoing comprehensive development and has co-edited two books on Maritime Law in China and Insurance Law in China and co-authored two editions of Singapore Arbitration Legislation with Professor Rob Merkin. She completed her doctoral thesis on fraudulent insurance claims under English law in 2016. Her publications have been cited by the courts in Singapore and Australia and by the Law Commissions of England and Wales and Scotland. She received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009 and the Vice Chancellor's Award in 2011.



Research interests

Marine insurance, insurance, carriage of goods by sea, enforcement of maritime claims, law of the sea.

Johanna is also an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Society of Legal Scholars, the Swedish Maritime Law Association and the Swedish Insurance Association and a freelance lawyer-linguist with the European Central Bank. She has acted as a consultant in commercial disputes, EU sponsored law reform projects and (pro bono) the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and non-governmental organisations.
