About this course

Chemistry is central to discovering new medicines. On this Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry degree, you’ll explore every stage of the drug development process.

You’ll learn how chemists design and develop new treatments, including:

  • designing molecules that could treat disease
  • understanding and predicting how medicines interact with the body
  • testing how effective and safe new treatments are

In addition to core chemistry modules, you’ll study specialist topics in medicinal chemistry and organics synthesis. You’ll also choose an optional module from:

  • advanced analytical techniques
  • sustainable chemistry
  • principles of electrochemistry
  • simulation methods in chemistry

Sustainability is a key theme throughout our chemistry courses. You’ll explore new technologies that make drug manufacturing more environmentally friendly. You’ll work in our refurbished labs and use the latest environmentally responsible practices.

We’re part of the Russell Group, which means you’ll learn from researchers who are making real-world impact. They’ll bring the latest discoveries into your lectures and seminars. Their wide-ranging research also gives you plenty of choice for your third-year project.

When you graduate, you’ll be ready to work in research where chemistry meets biology. Career-focused activities and talks from industry experts will help you explore your options and find a path that suits your strengths and interests.

Transfer to an MChem course

All our chemistry degrees share core modules in the first and second year. This means you can choose to transfer to an MChem couirse at the end of year 2.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.

Our courses are regulated in England by the Office for Students (OfS).
