About this course

This integrated 4-year master's combines chemistry and medicinal chemistry. You’ll learn how to develop new drugs to treat disease.

During the first two years, you’ll build a strong foundation in the fundamentals of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. In your third year, you’ll study core chemistry modules and explore specialist topics in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis.

You’ll also choose an optional module from:

  • advanced analytical techniques
  • principles of electrochemistry
  • simulation methods in chemistry
  • sustainable chemistry

In your final year you’ll complete an advanced research project leading to a master’s qualification, known as an integrated master’s degree. You can carry out your project:

Whichever option you choose you’ll gain specialist experience and transferable skills to support your career.

You’ll study in our modern refurbished labs and learn from expert academics. As a Russell Group University, our researchers are making real-world impact - from designing new cancer drugs to developing synthetic DNA in the fight against infectious diseases.

When you graduate, you’ll be ready to start a career in the pharmaceutical sector. This course also prepares you for a PhD - over 40% of our chemistry graduates take this as their next step.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.

Our courses are regulated in England by the Office for Students (OfS).
