Larry is a Senior Business Solutions Manager at the SAS Institute and has a Masters degree in Applied Statistics & Datamining from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. During his studies, Larry was awarded the best model developer in a knowledge discovery and datamining competition using a Kaggle dataset. This involved, using Naïve Bayes methods for predictions. His background has given him the opportunity to work in the analytics industry, solving varying problems and deriving ROI for his clients across all industries on their analytics investment. He has worked with clients such as Apple, EE, ExxonMobil and FedEx.

I chose the University of Southampton because of the applied work carried out by the Centre for Risk Research (CRR) which is undoubtedly ground breaking. The strength of using quantitative and qualitative techniques to effectively measure and quantify uncertainties and movement in various financial markets makes the CRR unique. They also have a culture of strong collaboration with the industry by translating academic hypotheses to effective and winning business strategies.

Larry says that "When analyzing data (small or big) it is very challenging to identify signals from noise. For example, financial datasets are often very noisy and coming up with a method to identify signals is very challenging. Being supervised by academic experts; Professor Johnnie Johnson, Professor Ming-Chien Sung and Dr. Tiejun Ma enables me to develop sound and applicable methods to financial markets."
