I completed a summer placement in London at the Institute of Cancer Research after my 2nd year of university, working in the research labs as part of an enzyme trial. I will be going on a 3 month industrial placement at BASF in Germany in summer 2016 to work in their research labs working on fungicides for crops.

I chose to study Chemistry, from a love developed in A-Level from carrying out all 3 sciences. I particularly love the problem solving aspect of Chemistry. I decided to choose this course with an integrated masters to enable more experience and options to be available in the future after graduation. I chose to study at Southampton as I was able to select my own optional modules, enabling a degree to be tailored to my interests and future.

I enjoy laboratory work the most at Southampton. This has been very enjoyable and is my favourite part of the week. The teaching staff are very supportive, and are always available for help if you are stuck on a section of theory, or just if you need advice. The student support in chemistry is amazing. Due to lab work you develop a strong friendship group which helps with coming to revising for exams and for help with assignments, as you can all work together and support each other. I definitely believe the facilities at Southampton enable a great working environment, as all the equipment and analysis methods are available for you to be prepared for a job in industry.

I participate in the university choir; JazzManix. I find this is a good stress reliever and we have 3 concerts per year that enables me to work towards something other than chemistry. I am also currently the Treasurer for the Zumba+ society, where we put on 4 classes a week. I find this is a great community of people and a fantastic way to let loose and have fun in a break between lectures.

My favourite memory was completing the organic chemistry summer school after my second year. We were able to work for 3 different companies on mini projects, as well as spending time with friends. I received a scholar award after my first year for coming 4th in the year.

Once I graduate, I would like to be able to complete a graduate scheme after my degree to specialise further in organic chemistry to hopefully work in industry.
