Choosing Southampton

I knew that I wanted to study Chemistry with Medicinal Sciences so I only looked at universities that offered this course. As I come from Bulgaria I was unable to attend any visit days, so I judged based on the information that was available about the course on the website. Southampton was very informative and the course stood out to me.

All the lecturers are very professional and helpful. There is lots of learning support in the form of tutorials, workshops and additional problem sets. The staff are very approachable and are always welcoming when you have a question, so I have never had problems with understanding the material.

A strong sense of community in Chemistry

The best thing about studying here is that there is a very strong sense of community in the Chemistry department. We have lots of small-group tutorials where we meet with academics, so you get to meet most of the staff by the end of your second year and learn more about the research that’s going on.

Also, we get to use modern teaching facilities, especially now with brand new undergraduate chemistry laboratories.

One of my highlights so far has been working on new research

The chemistry department has a range of research groups in all aspects of the field, so it can support the interests of every student. It is great to be able to share your passion for the subject with others and be part of new scientific advances. I did a summer project with one of the research groups in the department after my second year, which was truly enriching. I am working on a project for my dissertation right now and I am really excited to be able to do something completely new and unexplored.

Growing as a chemist, and as a person

For the past three years I have grown not only as a chemist, but as a person. Living away from home provides its challenges that help you to become more independent and mature. Chemistry can be a challenging subject to study which helps you to build important life skills such as time management and problem solving.

Southampton is perfect for students

It’s not too big but has a good range of activities going on, and feels very safe. I love how green it is. The Common is perfect for a picnic in the spring. There are also festivals held on The Common in the summer.

Finally, I’m a big fan of the sports centre. They offer lots of fitness classes for all levels that I regularly attend. The range of facilities they offer even includes a climbing wall.

My best memories are from weekend trips with the kitesurfing society and the annual extreme sports boat ball that is always lots of fun.

If I had to sum up how I feel about Southampton in one word, I would say ‘delighted’.
