On this 3-year course, you'll explore how robotics and autonomous systems are transforming industries such as manufacturing, transport and healthcare. You’ll also learn how to design, build and program intelligent machines that respond to complex environments and make decisions in real time.
You won’t just write code or build models on BEng Robotics – you’ll bring ideas to life through hands-on projects, developing robots, and running simulations and testing systems to understand how they perform beyond the lab.

You'll study towards your degree in robotics in our state-of-the-art teaching spaces, materials and structures research facility, and professional manufacturing facilities. You'll also get access to our multimillion-pound, high-spec computing labs, extensive robotics infrastructure, robotics simulation tools and 'digital twins' – virtual models of objects, systems or processes.
This robotics degree will give you the tools to design the technologies that will define how the world moves, works and interacts. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to progress into roles across robotics, automation, AI and advanced engineering industries.
If you'd like to gain experience in a professional engineering environment while on the course, you can take BEng Robotics with a paid industrial placement year. We also offer an MEng Robotics course, where students have the opportunity to take part in a group design project, set by a real industry or academic customer.

Robotics is a broad-based engineering discipline, so the structure of our robotics engineering bachelor's degree covers many core engineering topics while providing a focus on the application of these topics in robotic contexts.
The BEng Robotics course focuses particularly on the following key aspects of robotics engineering:
The first 2 years of this degree in robotics consider the fundamentals of engineering, focusing on mechanical engineering topics. These 2 years share some content with our mechanical engineering programmes while offering robotics-specific modules which apply broader principles to robotics problems.
The application of robotics knowledge and skills becomes more prominent as you progress through the course, ensuring that you can apply your theoretical understanding to a wide range of real problems.
From early on in BEng Robotics, we emphasise the control of complex robot motion, as well as the study of practical aspects which are fundamental to the application of robotic systems in our complex human society. Here the programme covers aspects such as human-robot interaction, and environmental, legal and regulatory issues.
We also use computational methods throughout the course, providing you with the tools you need to analyse and control different robotic systems. In your last year, you'll have the opportunity to study a range of computational and AI methods that are relevant to robotic perception, manoeuvring and control. Projects and dedicated modules also allow you to explore a wide range of different robotic application domains.
Between your second and third year, you can choose to have an industrial placement year. You must organise this placement, but we will provide support and guidance.
We've designed this robotics degree in accordance with the Engineering Council requirements as a pathway to become a chartered professional engineer.
