Hi, I'm Kayleigh Ramchand and I studied within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

The teaching at Southampton is amazing! As our course is small, the lecturers know you personally. If you come to them with a question or a problem that you’re having, they know how to approach it because they have seen you perform and know you well.

What made you choose Southampton?

I’m a pop singer, and the University has a strong Pop and Jazz department, which isn’t offered by very many other universities.

What made you choose your course?

I’ve always really wanted to do music since I was younger, so it was an easy decision to make!

Do you have a favourite module?

I loved Performance – it was my favourite module! I really enjoyed a module called ‘Flappers to Rappers’ which was about women in music, their different approaches and how society sees them. I also really enjoyed Commercial Composition.

What did you think about living and studying in Southampton?

I loved it! It’s a really nice place to be. The department is a really friendly place to be. The lecturers are really friendly and everyone is so supportive of each other.

Did you get involved in any clubs or societies?

Yes, I was involved with MuSoc and did a lot of gigs at the Talking Heads. In my first year, I was also a Vixen. I was a member of their dance squad.

What did you think of the teaching at Southampton?

Amazing! As our course is small, the lecturers know you personally which I don’t think you would necessarily get on a bigger course. If you come to them with a question or a problem that you’re having, they know how to approach it because they have seen you perform and know you well.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking about coming to Southampton?

Come here! The lecturers are so helpful and know you well. I think that made such a big difference to my time at university.

What are your plans for the future?

My plan is to be a full time singer, which is what I have been doing since I left. I have played at a few festivals so far and I plan to continue in the future.
