Web Science Institute "One Year On": Privacy and Trust in the Era of Big Data Analytics

WSI One Year On!

The WSI held a special event in London on Monday 8 June to celebrate it's First Birthday bringing together leading figures from Web and Internet Science.

This very special event which was held at the Digital Catapult Centre, London aimed to report on the WSI's first year of activity and opened with an Exhibition showcasing the University of Southampton's interdisciplinary Web Science research. This was followed by an afternoon of panel-led talks and discussions focussing on Privacy and Surveillance, Trust, and Big Data Analytics.

The University of Southampton has played a significant role in the creation, development and understanding of the Web over the last 25 years, including the foundation of the innovative discipline of Web Science.

Institute Directors Professor Dame Wendy Hall, Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt, Professor Susan Halford and Professor Leslie Carr led the discussions and were joined by leading figures from Web and Internet Science which included:

  • Sir David Omand, Visiting Professor in War Studies, King’s College, London
  • Philip Sheldrake, Euler Partners
  • Liz Brandt, CEO, Ctrl-Shift
  • Gavin Starks, CEO, Open Data Institute
  • John Taysom, Visiting Professor of the Department of Computer Science, UCL & Web Science Trust Board member
  • Dr Dan McQuillan - Goldsmiths, University of London
  • Dr Alison Powell, London School of Economics
  • Caroline Wilson - Anura Consulting Ltd

A presentation was also given by three of the Web Science DTC students, Reuben Binns, Emma Cradock and Richard Gomer.
