Ancient World Studies

Who we are

Ancient History at Southampton draws on a wealth of talent from within the Faculty of Humanities. As a group of scholars of international renown, we are united by a shared interest in ancient worlds, approached from a diverse range of materials.

Ancient History reflects the research interests of approximately 20 members of staff drawn from History, Archaeology, English, Philosophy, Modern Languages and Film. Our interests range from the study of Ancient Egypt, to its representation on Film, from the editing of Latin texts to the underwater excavation of Roman ports.

This diversity of staff interests is reflected in the interdisciplinary character of our Ancient History degrees. The unique feature is their breadth, allowing you to develop your own interests in the past and the techniques to explore it. You will learn from experts in their field, who build their own research into teaching, and who will guide you in your own development as a researcher.
