The Centre for Risk Research (sponsored by the UK Economic and Social Research Council) played a leading role in facilitating a very successful first China-EU Big data and Finance Symposium in Shenzen in December 2016.

The symposium involved the co-operation and support of the Shenzhen Longhua New District Economic Services Bureau, Shenzhen Longhua New District High-level Talent Development Association, Shenzhen Software Park, Baoneng High-Tech Park and Audaque Ltd. The symposium was aimed at promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration between academic and international scientific research institutions. It achieved its aim by inviting Big data and FinTech experts from UK and other EU countries to visit Shenzhen to give keynote presentations and to engage in panel discussions. In this way, the symposium explored ways of promoting big data and financial technology R&D. There were also sessions facilitating international research/industry collaborations in order to improve the competitiveness of high tech sectors of Shenzhen.

Mr Guangming Su, the Director of the China International Talent Exchange Foundation, congratulated the organisers: "China and the EU should persist in establishing international collaborations such as this. By actively promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience on Big data and FinTech, we can make full use of international innovation resources for developing a better world economy".

Dr. Tiejun Ma, and Dr. Xibei Jia, the Symposium co-chairs, also highlighted the great opportunities the symposium offered to UK/EU academics to collaborate with academic and industry partners in China. A good example of such a collaboration is that already underway between the Shenzhen local government, Audaque Ltd and the Centre for Risk Research, University of Southampton.

The symposium attracted over 300 delegates (including over eighty CEO/CTO/directors/government officials) from over 140 academic, industry and government organisations. The symposium has attracted significant press coverage, being reported over 100 in influential news media outlets, such as the Nanfang Daily, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, Baoan Daily, People's Daily,, CCTV, and other media oultlets (e.g. ,
