Joanne joined SHTAC in August 2015 as Director and Professorial Fellow in Health Economics.

As Director, Joanne is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of SHTAC as a centre of excellence in health technology assessment. Joanne manages SHTAC’s core research programme for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment programme, as well as managing and developing other funded research.

Joanne’s personal research relates to the cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions, including: therapies for low back pain and arthritis; tests for tuberculosis infection and disease; management of obesity in patients with diabetes; pulmonary rehabilitation; care pathways for atrial fibrillation; and prevention of cardiovascular disease. She is a collaborator on a study evaluating the provision of high intensity specialist led care for acute medical admissions at weekends. In addition to applied studies, she is interested in methods for conducting economic analysis alongside clinical trials and methods of decision analytic modelling. Joanne’s PhD dissertation (2003) investigated methods for the analysis of uncertainty in health economic evaluation.

Prior to joining SHTAC Joanne was Reader in Health Economics at the Health Economics Research Group (HERG) at Brunel University, London (2008-15). Joanne has also held posts at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) (Technical Advisor in the clinical guidelines programme 2004-2008; and Technical Analyst in the technology appraisals programme 2000), Imperial College Management School (Lecturer 2000-2004), St. George’s Hospital Medical School (Research Fellow and Lecturer in the public health department 1992-1999), and the Department of Health (Scientific Advisor in the operational research group 1989-1992).

Joanne is currently a member of the Health Technology Assessment programme’s Commissioning Board. Along with other board members she assesses the scientific merit of research proposals received by the programme and make recommendations for funding.
