Dr Oliver Marnet

Oliver Marnet is the Programme Director of the MSc Accounting and Finance degree, and former Head of the Accounting Department.  He joined the Southampton Business School in 2013 from the University of Exeter.  He has a PhD (University of Bath), an MA with Distinction (Carleton University) and an MA with Distinction (University of New Brunswick), with degrees in Economics and International Affairs, and a research focus on behavioural decision-making applied to audit and corporate governance.  He gained a Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (Aberystwyth University) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Dr Marnet’s teaching interests cut across Accounting, Finance, Audit and Governance, having taught relevant modules to undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, executive MBA, and professional accounting and finance, management and economics students.

He has a continued research interests in accounting, finance, audit, governance and judgement and decision-making, with particular interest in governance (corporate governance and financial reporting), audit, accounting and accountability, and the quality of judgement and decision-making of auditors and board directors.

He has published extensively in a number of internationally recognised journals, such as the British Journal of Management, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Journal of Professional Negligence, International Journal of Critical Accounting, International Journal of Behavioural Accounting and Finance, amongst others, published a book, various book chapters and contributed to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Management, as well as having produced a number of commissioned grant supported reports.

Dr Marnet regularly presents his research at national and international conferences, workshops, and seminars, and has won competitive research grant awards from, inter alia, the ICAEW and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, UK.  He has conducted research for the European Commission, Big-4 accounting firms, the Pensions & Investment Research Consultants Ltd (PIRC), Research Fortnight HE, and contributed to The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators’ (ICSA) review of the Higgs Guidance for the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) leading to the publication of the Guidance on Board Effectiveness (FRC, 2011).

Finally, he has successfully supervised a significant number of PhD candidates, and numerous MA/MSc and UG dissertations.

My current research interest is on the impact of social and psychological factors on the quality of decision-making of agents in governance, with a particular focus on auditors and corporate boards. This work frequently involves joint work with the private and professional sector, and is typically aimed at providing practical guidance to practitioners and policy makers.
